# OpenClaw Integration

> Use Astrolabe Cloud as a hosted provider for OpenClaw and other OpenAI-compatible clients.

OpenClaw can call Astrolabe Cloud through the hosted gateway the same way any OpenAI-compatible client does.

Astrolabe Cloud handles routing, fallback, billing, stack policy, and route traces outside the OpenClaw runtime.

## Provider values

Use these values in OpenClaw or an equivalent custom provider configuration:

* Base URL: `https://api.astrolabe.run/v1`
* API type: `openai-responses`
* API key: your Astrolabe Cloud workspace API key
* Primary model: `astrolabe/auto`

For clients that only support Chat Completions, use the same base URL and call `POST /v1/chat/completions`.

## Recommended models

Most OpenClaw setups should expose Astrolabe virtual models:

* `astrolabe/auto`
* `astrolabe/coding`
* `astrolabe/research`
* `astrolabe/vision`
* `astrolabe/strict-json`
* `astrolabe/cheap`
* `astrolabe/safe`

Virtual models keep client configuration stable while Astrolabe updates the concrete model roster and stack policies behind the gateway.

## Passing stack context

OpenClaw can select a stack or set per-request routing preferences through request metadata:

```json theme={null}
{
  "model": "astrolabe/auto",
  "input": "Patch the failing test and explain the fix.",
  "metadata": {
    "astrolabe": {
      "stack": "code-agent",
      "quality": "high",
      "cost_mode": "balanced",
      "verification": "auto",
      "fallback": true
    }
  }
}
```

Useful stack choices for OpenClaw-style workloads:

* `code-agent` for code editing, tool loops, and schema-safe recovery
* `research` for source-heavy synthesis
* `strict-json` for structured tool arguments and schema validation
* `customer-data` for PII-aware workflows

## Debugging

When a turn behaves unexpectedly, capture:

* `x-astrolabe-cloud-request-id`
* `x-astrolabe-model`
* `x-astrolabe-stack-name`
* `x-astrolabe-stack-version`
* `x-astrolabe-policy-status`
* `x-astrolabe-decision`
* `x-astrolabe-category`
* `x-astrolabe-action-class`
* `x-astrolabe-lane`

Use the request id in Astrolabe Cloud route traces to inspect selected candidates, rejected candidates, estimated savings, fallback behavior, and billing outcome.
